Tonight, after several weeks of lessons on phonemic awareness and sound-symbol knowledge warm-ups, my daughter proudly showed me the following sentence that she wrote while hanging out before dinner. I asked her what it said and she pointed to each letter and “read” the following sentence out loud:
“You are a little bunny.”
As I looked closely, I saw the beginning letter for each word in her oral sentence. She was SO proud. I could see it in her eyes. She understood what she wrote and was making the connection between the symbols she made on the page and the sounds she heard in the words she wanted to put in her sentence.
We did a little dance together and I yelled for the rest of the family to come and see. This was no small thing! So tonight, we celebrated her and the progress she has made.
All my love,
Kait
